You can highlight the novelty of your study, innovation of your approach, or strength of your conclusions. Start with the most important message or feature of your manuscript. Use plain, non-technical language because the editor may not be an expert in your particular field or topic, and avoid sounding too self-promotional, emotional, informal, or wordy. In your cover letter, however, you summarise the manuscript but focus on the value of your contribution to the journal and discipline, so as to persuade the editor to read the abstract. In your abstract, you summarise the manuscript using similar language and a similar order of information (introduction, methods, results, conclusion), so as to entice readers to read the full text. This is where you convince the editor that your manuscript is worth reviewing.Īs tempting as it may be, don’t simply copy and paste the abstract of your manuscript, as the purposes and styles of an abstract and a cover letter are different. It has since grown into one of the world’s biggest closely held video-game companies, with Sweeney as the majority shareholder and China’s Tencent Holdings Ltd controlling a 40% stake. He founded Cary, North Carolina-based Epic in 1991, when he was still a student at the University of Maryland. Such arrangements were justified as they ensure popular apps like Spotify are accessible on and draw more users to Android phones and Google Play, Harrison said.Įpic made US$5.1bil (RM23.70bil) in revenue in 2020, Sweeney revealed when he testified in the Apple case. “Android is the only major mobile platform that gives developers multiple ways to distribute apps.”Įarlier in the day, Don Harrison, who heads global partnerships at Google, revealed that his company had an agreement with Spotify that gave the music streaming service a generous break on developer fees: Spotify pays 0% if users opt to use the music platform’s payment system and 4% if users go with the Google Play billing system to process transactions.īoth companies agreed to invest US$50mil (RM232.37mil) each in a “success fund” and the music-streaming app promotes “good experiences” on Android devices, including smart watches, as part of the deal, Harrison said.īy highlighting the Spotify deal, Epic was trying to show that Google selectively offers some companies discounted rates through special partnerships, even while it generally restricts developers from offering payment methods other than Google Play billing. “This choice and flexibility is possible only on Android,” she said. Kravis also prompted Sweeney to acknowledge that none of the three game console makers allow developers to let users download their apps directly through websites other than Google’s Android operating system.Įpic lawyer’s Gary Bornstein later got Sweeney to clarify that Apple and Microsoft charge 0% fees to distribute Fortnite on personal computers.Ī Google spokeswoman said Epic takes full advantage of Android’s distribution options by making Fortnite available for billions of Android users around the world to download through the Samsung Galaxy Store and directly through their website. Kravis got Sweeney to admit that by the end of 2020 Epic paid a 30% cut to Sony Corp’s PlayStation, Microsoft’s Xbox and Nintendo consoles on US$12bil (RM55.77bil) Epic earned on the three platforms. On cross-examination, Google’s lawyer Jonathan Kravis questioned Sweeney to underpin the technology company’s argument that the 30% cut is the standard fee charged to developers by gaming platforms. When asked by Epic’s lawyer what he hopes the jury will decide, he said: “We want the jury to find that Google has violated the law so the court can make Google stop enforcing these policies.” Sweeney told jurors that Epic isn’t seeking any monetary damages. Sweeney said in 2018 he believed Android wasn’t closed to developers, but subsequently realised Google’s operating system was a “fake open platform” that was actually just as closed as he found Apple’s App Store to be in terms of policies for developers. The Epic CEO testified that Google tried to cut a deal with his company that he rejected and went on to strike “secret” accords with mobile device makers to maintain Google Play as the dominant Android app marketplace. An appeals court upheld the judge’s ruling and Epic is now asking the US Supreme Court to review it. Epic mostly lost that fight, which was decided by a federal judge in Oakland, California, after a trial. Sweeney previously testified in a 2021 trial in a similar antitrust suit targeting Apple Inc’s App Store policies as unfair and self-serving. If Epic prevails, Google could be forced to allow competing app marketplaces and payment methods on its app store, threatening billions of dollars in revenue generated by Google Play. The jury trial started two weeks ago and is expected to wrap up in early December. “We very much wanted to avoid that and do business directly with our customers,” Sweeney told jurors. The court fight started in 2020 when Epic marketed Fortnite on Android and sidestepped the Google Play billing system and the 30% revenue cut it was taking from app developers. Sweeney, who founded the company that makes the blockbuster Fortnite, took the witness stand Nov 20 in San Francisco federal court to reinforce his claims that Google Play policies are unlawful and allow Alphabet Inc to maintain a monopoly in the Android mobile-app distribution market. Epic Games Inc chief executive officer Tim Sweeney testified that Google’s Android operating system is a “fake open platform” in a high-stakes antitrust lawsuit over claims that the technology giant thwarts app market competition. It could take years of luck and sound monetary policy to get it back. A few years of rising prices, however, have shattered that confidence. That translated into low inflation expectations-and high confidence in those expectations, which in turn contributed to price stability in the US. An oil price shock, a single bad inflation report, perhaps even high turkey prices-any of them could cause people to lose confidence in stability.īefore the pandemic, a generation of Americans had no experience at all of high inflation, while for millions of others, it was a distant memory at worst. When people are not confident in their expectations, it does not take much for fear of inflation to return. It also suggests that even if inflation continues to fall, it is not as stable as it was before 2020. The uncertainty makes their dollar worth less, in risk terms. It helps explain why consumers still complain about inflation and have a dim economic outlook. This suggests much less consensus and certainty around future prices. By data analysis, median inflation expectations. Both surveys indicate consumers are much more uncertain about what inflation will be in the coming years, compared to back in 2020. But here is where my pessimism creeps in: Confidence in those expectations is gone. Again, this is good news for the Fed and the chances of a soft landing. Even when inflation was high last year, they consistently expected low inflation in the next five years. And if you look at median expectations of inflation a year or five years from now, both from the surveys of consumers from University of Michigan and from the New York Fed, consumers are also expecting inflation to fall next year. So if the Fed cites bond-market expectations, it should not give anyone much comfort.īut there is another metric: household surveys. And in fact, the bond market has a terrible track record predicting inflation. Of course, bond markets often get things wrong, and break-evens reflect some quirks in the bond market that have nothing to do with inflation. If expectations suddenly increased, odds are there would be another rate increase. This measure of expectations probably bolstered the Fed’s confidence that it was on the right track. They have been fairly stable even as inflation rose, indicating that the market expected transitory inflation all along. Both these measures are expectations of what inflation will be several years from now. The most popular are from bond derivatives and break-evens -or the difference between nominal and inflation-indexed bond yields. So the Fed looks at expectations carefully, noting if they are “well anchored," for example i.e., impervious to data on current inflation.Įxpectation measurements can come from the bond market. Expectations also explain why the Fed sets an inflation target: If everyone expects 2% inflation next year, then there’s a good chance that’s what we’ll get. They can also determine wage and price hikes, investment plans and asset prices. The best we have is expectations of inflation.Įxpectations can be self-fulfilling. It also increases interest rates on longer term bonds, because investors and lenders need to be compensated for the extra risk taken. One of the dirty little secrets of economics, however, is that we have no good model for predicting inflation. Uncertainty around inflation means a dollar is less valuable because you don’t know how much groceries will cost, or how far you can stretch your pay-cheque week to week. An asset offering variable returns is worth less, all else being equal, than one that offers fixed returns, because the predictability of knowing what your money is worth has tremendous value. Unpredictable prices act as a kind of tax on consumers. In many ways, the predictability of inflation is just as important as its level. For a stable economy, inflation needs to be low and predictable going forward, like it was pre-pandemic. It’s not enough for inflation to hit the US Federal Reserve’s target of 2%. That means the situation is unstable and inflation could go back up again. But take a closer look and it’s clear that some measures of expectations have not improved that much even as inflation has fallen. Optimism comes not only from the decline in actual inflation, but also from the decline in expectations of future inflation. The sunnier view does have a lot going for it. This opening has got to be one of the most disappointing beginnings ever. However, to some it is a pleasant way to extend your full game experience (If you actually enjoy being forced to do that sort of thing, I don’t want to meet you.)īut let’s not be dragged down by that quite yet, it couldn’t hurt to give the game a try can it? I was initially impressed at the concept of “easy” for just helping you dip your foot in the water, but forcing you to go through three more difficulty levels, each at a higher level cap, and slower speed seems cruel. You must beat Normal to unlock Hard, and hard, to unlock ultimate. Now, you might be thinking, “Well, I’m going to just start on Ultimate and not have to grind through those first three difficulties.” But, of course, you can’t. In normal, you go at normal XP gain, but can also reach level fifty, etc etc. On easy mode you double the experience you gain, however you can not learn “Special” skills, and only can reach level thirty. There are four difficulties: Easy, Normal, Hard, and Ultimate. This goes on the aspect of “interesting” things in the game (Note I didn’t say “good”, just “interesting”). Lastly, you must decide what difficult you want to play on. Although Shaiya doesn’t actually slap a difficulty level on the classes, it does have a set of bars rating the Attack, Defense, Group effectiveness and Solo effectiveness, making it easy to figure out what class suits your play-style best. One thing that is however interesting about the classes is how the classes are set up in description, and is similar to Anarchy Online’s (Also covered in Free Play #5) class system. Although this removes a layer of uniqueness, this makes sure everyone is on even ground. Humans are mostly like the Nordein, and Elves are similar to the Vail (And vice versa). In the end it hardly even matters what side you take, since each race mirrors the other in the classes they use, and their only real difference is in name only. But since there’s two servers to choose from, it really isn’t that big a deal. This sounds important in the beginning, because you can only be on one side per server. You can either join the Alliance of Light, (Elves and Humans) or the Union of Fury (Vail(( Dark elves)) and Nordein). But before you do that you need to pick which army to ally with. So, now you’re pumped to play right? Let’s get that character set up. You must choose who your loyalties lie with, and help bring an end, to this ongoing struggle. Those allying themselves with the goddess of light would call themselves Elves (told you), and on the opposing side were the Vail (I don’t care what anyone says, these are just Dark Elves).Īs the war raged on, the Nordein returned, calling themselves “Death Eaters” came to the aid of the Vail, and the Humans appeared to ally with the Elves. As a result, the Dumianas split into two factions, both siding with the different gods. As a result, gods fought each other for the control of Teos, plaguing it with monsters.Įventually, it would come down to two goddess, one representing light, and the other representing darkness, still fighting over the world of Teos. The idea is that after the Nordein people (a large brutish race) were removed from their throne up high in the heavens of by the goddess Etain, the Dumianas (Elves, really) grew angry with her, and actually killed her. Some servers may also have restrictions on who can join or require approval from the server owner. The back-story to Shaiya is a simple one, however it leaves a feeling that you are part of a rather epic battle. Q: Can I invite my friends to play on a Private Server with me? A: Yes, you can usually invite your friends to play on a Private Server with you, as long as the server owner allows it and there is enough space on the server for everyone. Make sure to only join servers that are reputable and well-maintained, and be wary of servers that require you to download and install custom software or mods. Q: Are Private Servers safe to play on? A: Private Servers can be safe to play on, but it's important to exercise caution and do your research before joining a server. Additionally, they have different rates for experience, drops, or other game mechanics. Q: What are the benefits of playing on a Private Server? A: Shaiya Storm has modified rules, gameplay, and content that differs from the official server. Private Servers are typically set up to provide an alternative game experience or to provide access to content that may not be available on the official server. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs): Q: What is a Private Server? A: Private Server is a server that is privately owned and operated, often by individuals or groups of players, rather than the official game publisher or developer. While the above might provide a nice and clear case of discovering an unexpected ammonia sensitivity in an application, and a cautionary tale of needing to always test one’s process, there remains additional curiosities to share. As you can see in Image 2, after applying two coats of Archival Varnish Satin to India Ink swatches on all three substrates, they were able to be overpainted with GOLDEN Gesso and GAC 100 with no sign of being disturbed: Image 2: GOLDEN products applied over India Ink coated with 2 light layers of Archival Varnish (Satin). Another route would be to first fix the India Ink with a couple coats of Archival Varnish, thereby locking it in and providing a barrier that protects it. Obviously using a different ink, as the tests above show, might be one solution, although each ink would need to be tested beforehand and the character of the drawing would likely need to change. In terms of what one can do, there are a couple of options. And in a case like this, if one imagines a drawing in India Ink being over painted with acrylics, the consequences could spell irreparable ruin. Any surprise is simply caused by the fact that we think of acrylics so strongly as water based that other factors, like ammonia sensitivity, might go unnoticed. So, what is happening? As it turns out, while the India Ink is indeed ‘waterproof’ – in the sense that water alone will not cause it to run – it remains sensitive to the ammonia and other alkaline materials that can typically be found in acrylics, not to mention many household cleaners. Image 1: Testing inks on various substrates for sensitivity to GOLDEN Gesso, GAC 100 and QoR Watercolor. The surfaces we tried included Ampersand’s Gessobord™, Multimedia’s Artboard®, and Arches® 140lb cold pressed watercolor paper. This is something you can easily see in Image 1 where we tested India Ink, Sharpie® Permanent Marker, and Sakura’s IDenti™ Pen by brushing over them with our GOLDEN Gesso, GAC 100, and a wash of QoR Watercolor. All of a sudden what was waterbased seems quite water soluble, the sharp edges of the wash or line becoming easily liquified with barely any effort. The curiosity comes when you attempt to brush over the India Ink with any of our mediums, gels, grounds, or paints. Which, after all, is the common solvent for shellac, so not all that surprising. If you look at the many examples we show in the Just Paint article, Make a Mark, you can clearly see that the ink holds its own through a range of finger rubs and water washes, only becoming smeared when using rubbing alcohol. And one would certainly think describing something as waterproof is straightforward and plain enough to avoid confusion. Among the ones being tested was the tried and true India Ink – richly black, shellac-based, and solidly waterproof. Which is where we found ourselves a few years back when testing a variety of inks and how they perform on our various grounds, pastes, and mediums. Even the simplest description can set in motion assumptions that lead us to expect one thing only to be sitting there, moments later, head slightly tilted, a quizzical glance showing equal parts frustration and fascination. Over cautious maybe but I know how gutting it feels when result isn't the desired one.Īlso worth remembering water based stain can leave the wood looking dry or greyish when dried but once mineral oil/fretboard conditioner is applied you get the full depth of colour.Īpologies if I've waffled on and you knew this already. We all get tripped up and surprised sometimes. This ratio indicates the productivity of fixed assets in generating revenue. Total asset turnover ratio should be looked at together with the company's financing mix and its net profit margin for a better analysis as discussed in DuPont analysis.A f ixed Assets Turnover Ratio (FATR) is the ratio of the activity (the ratio of efficiency) that measures how effectively and efficiently a company uses its assets or assets to generate revenue. Since opening working capital is $20, and closing working capital is $20 ($50-$30), average working capital of $20 and the working capital turnover ratio would be 10 (=$200/$20). This gives us a fixed asset turnover ratio of $200/$55 = 3.63 If the industry average total asset turnover ratio is 1.2, we can conclude that the company has used its assets more effectively in generating revenue.Īs opening fixed assets were $60, closing fixed assets are $60-$10=$50. Since sales are $200, total asset turnover ratio is 1.82 (=$200/$110). Solutionįirst, we need to find average total assets by adding opening and closing total assets and dividing by 2. Calculate total asset turnover, fixed asset turnover and working capital turnover ratios. Current assets and current liabilities were $50 and $30 as at the year end. During the year it charged depreciation of $10 and there were no fixed asset additions during the year. During FY 20X1 it generated sales of $200 with COGS of $160 and its total assets as at 30 December 20X1 were $120. ExampleĪs at 1 January 20X1, Gamma had total assets of $100, total fixed assets of $60 and net working capital of $20. However, in DuPont analysis, it is based on closing total assets instead of average total assets. Total asset turnover ratio is a key driver of return on equity as discussed in the DuPont analysis. On the other hand, a lower turnover ratio shows that the company is not using its assets optimally. If a company can generate more sales with fewer assets it has a higher turnover ratio which tells us that it is using its assets more efficiently. The asset turnover ratio is time-dependent in that a ratio for one month would be 1/12th of the ratio for a whole year. Net sales equals gross sales minus any sales tax or VAT, sales returns and trade discounts.Īverage total assets value is calculated by adding the beginning and ending balance of total assets and dividing the sum by 2. Total assets turnover ratio is calculated using the following formula: Total Assets Turnover Ratio = net sales (both cash and credit) but denominator is average total assets, average fixed assets, and average working capital, respectively. In all cases the numerator is the same i.e. There are other turnover ratios, such as the fixed assets turnover ratio and working capital turnover ratio. It is an asset-utilization ratio which tells us how efficiently the company is using its assets to generate revenue.Īsset turnover ratio is also called total assets turnover ratio. Asset turnover ratio is the ratio of a company's net sales to its average total assets. |
